The Parables of Jesus Series | Parable of The Travelling Homeowner

The next parable we will be looking at is the Parable of the Travelling Homeowner. This parable is found in Mark 13:34-37 and it reads;

34 “The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return. 35 You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. 36 Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. 37 I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!”

The man who has gone on a long trip represents Jesus Christ. He has given each and every one of us an assignment to do. Not only has He given us work to do, He also gave us instructions on how to do the work He has laid on our hands. As we do the work, He has asked us to be on guard because He knows that we can be distracted. The road isn’t smooth. It is full of bumps. However we have the Holy Spirit who guides us along the way.

Mark 13 tells us how to live while we wait for Christ’s return.

  • We are not to be misled by confusing claims or speculative interpretations of what will happen.
  • We should not be afraid to tell people about Christ, despite what they might say or do to us.
  • We must stand firm by faith and not be surprised by persecution.
  • We must be morally alert, obedient to the commands for living found in God’s word.

Jesus didn’t give us timescales on when he will return. He has told us to be in right living for God in a world where He is largely ignored.

May He meet us well.

  1. Good reminder to always be ready for the return of Christ. As I look around at all that is happening these days, I am constantly drawn back to the Lord’s words in Matthew 24. He told us what the signs would be, but He did not give a timetable. Considering the wickedness of man, I’m sure that He knew that giving us an exact time would not be wise. I love your parables series and hope that you continue them.

    1. Aww thank you so much. This is very encouraging to read. I was beginning to feel like it’s taking long to finish because I started it in January. How are you doing? I hope to be more present here again soon. God bless
