The Parables of Jesus Series | Parable of The Faithful and Sensible Servants

The next parable we will be looking at is the parable of the faithful and sensible servants. This parable can be found in Matthew 25:45-51. It reads;

45 “A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them. 46 If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward. 47 I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns. 48 But what if the servant is evil and thinks, ‘My master won’t be back for a while,’ 49 and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk? 50 The master will return unannounced and unexpected, 51 and he will cut the servant to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The parable is repeated in Luke 12:42-48.

Interpretation

There are servants and there are faithful and sensible servants. God wants us to not just be servants but faithful and sensible servants. These servants are the ones who spend their time of waiting serving others and doing God’s work here on earth. Doing God’s work isn’t confined to the walls of the church or church community. We are not light of the church but light of the world. So let’s serve faithfully inside and outside. Let’s be good stewards in our offices, businesses, church, marriages, homes etc. This is the best way to prepare for Christ’s return.

We are in times when many people have forgotten about Christ’s second coming. As a result, their love for Him and for service has gone cold. Some believers have started tolerating the very things they once spoke against because the bible condemned such acts. Some have become “comfortable” christians who want to play life safe. “It doesn’t really matter” is now the phrase used in condoling sin.

May we not be caught unaware.

Those who will be caught unaware will be subjected to despair which is described in this parable as weeping and gnashing of teeth. God’s judgement is as certain as Jesus’ return to earth. If He chooses to come now, will he find us faithful?
