The woman who touched Jesus’s garment to be healed had an imperfect, almost superstitious faith. But it was genuine, and it was directed toward the right Person. Jesus therefore healed her. This is a beautiful picture of the helpless sinner receiving salvation, even though his faith is faltering and limited in knowledge.

In 1957 Watson Spoelstra, sportswriter for the Detroit News, was riding the crest of journalistic success. Then a wave of trouble broke over him. Arriving home one evening, he found his daughter sprawled out on the floor with a brain hemorrhage. A short time later in the hospital chapel he prayed, “Look, God, I’ll make a deal with you. You do something about Ann, and I’ll let You do something about me.” Spoelstra’s life had been “wild,” and his drinking had “gotten out of hand.” But now he was dead serious with God. Reflecting on his prayer, he wrote later, “That in substance is what I said. But with that little, feeble half-step that I took, the Lord reached out and touched me, and I knew at that moment that somehow my life was going to change and be different, and it has.” Ann survived, and for the next 40 years, Spoelstra served the Lord through Baseball Chapel and other sports ministries.

Has your life crashed in all around you? Jesus will put the broken pieces together again if you’ll admit that you are a helpless sinner and reach out to him. Take a step of faith-even a half-step – and He will do the rest. – Dennis De Hann (Our Daily Bread)
