This is a short post just to share with you something that jumped out to me during yesterday’s church service. One of the christmas hymns we sang was ‘Oh Holy Night’, which happens to be one of my favourite christmas songs. This song is always on repeat in my house during the christmas season. I particularly like Mariah Carey’s version.
After the worship team led the worship, a pastors came up and highlighted a line from this hymn. The line was;
“…Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth”
She mentioned how void we were until we accepted Jesus Christ into our lives.
Our soul is where our emotions come from. It seeks to be valued and to have a sense of belonging. We can never understand our worth until we accept Jesus’ coming into our lives. That is only when our lives have true meaning and the vacuum in our soul are filled.
For those of us who have experienced the overwhelming love of God, He wants us to let others see His love through us. There is no better time to express this than christmas season. So as we are busy thinking of us, let’s make an effort to reach out to someone outside of our fold. That they will encounter Christ through us this season. Let’s not be a hindrance preventing others from seeing the love of Christ. As they experience this love who is Christ, their souls will also know their worth.
“O Holy Night” has long been my favorite, and during the years I taught French I learned the French words. (I’m not sure, but I think it may have been written in French originally.) I was amazed that the whole gospel is so clearly laid out in that language – calling Jesus “the God-Man,” saying He came to erase the original stain and put an end to the curse. The second verse contains a sharp rebuke to the arrogance of the “powerful” of the day, and in the third verse it is declared that Jesus has broken the chains, that it was for US that He was born, that He suffered and died. I pray regularly for Europe, and for France in particular, in this “post-Christian” age, that they would revisit this carol and ponder its words. May God speak to them again.

Praise the LORD Sister. This is spot on. We can tell people until we are blue in the face and they run away how glorious God is BUT it is that Love that He gives us, that if we share THAT, people will want that love too. It is rarely our words that draw people to the LORD. It is that Love, and they want it. I hear in more testimony than one that “I wanted what Sister or Brother so in so had” Great post Efua, as always 🙂

“Oh, Holy Night” was always one of my favorite songs to sing, but I never really gave thought to this line before, “…Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.” I am going to think on that one today. Thank you, Efua, for sharing.

Efua, Yes they do! I admit that I used to just sing the hymns of the faith without much thought to the words. I was just singing. But, then the Lord began including the hymns in the devotions he has me write, and so I had to read the words to the hymns and I can tell you that it helps to just read them and to think about what they mean without singing them. I discovered words and meanings I didn’t even know existed.

I have developed a new love for hymns sis. I think just reading them is a good idea which I will start implementing. I have always admired your love for hymns.

Efua, thank you. Praise Jesus! So glad you are going to be reading the hymns. Not all of them are great, but the vast majority of them are just so rich in biblical truth, holiness and righteousness. Any time that anyone of them touches your heart and you just want to share it with someone, please feel free to share it with me. I would love that, either on here or in an email. cfservant@gmail.com.
