Do you smell good?

“And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” John 12:32

One of the reasons why i love the bible is that it comes alive in various forms. Despite there is often times a concept behind scriptures, i have also realised that the Holy Spirit can give us different revelations about scriptures that helps us links them with our personal situations and circumstances. With that in mind i am very mindful not to zero my mind on how a scripture is to be interpreted because this prevents me from learning. So long the interpretation does not go beyond the boundaries of our faith and belief, then i think not being open minded to other revelations is like us putting the Holy Spirit in a box.

The above scripture was the words of Jesus Christ. In saying the above, He was referring to His death. Jesus Christ was lifted up from the ground and hung on the cross to die. In His death, He bridged the gap between us and God and drew us closer to God. His death gave us access to the Father and brought us into communion with Him.

Few weeks ago the Holy Spirit gave me another revelation of this verse. Jesus will not go on the cross ever again. So how can we life Him up today?

Our lifestyle. Our lives have a smell. The smell is a magnet that has the power to push or pull away. As believers, we are representatives of Jesus Christ on earth. We are the Jesus Christ people see. As reps of Christ, our lives are to align with His.

The challenge we have today and i believe the reason why many unbelievers are struggling to come into the church is because they are confused as our words don’t match our actions. We talk about how God is love but our words are like daggers. Our attitudes are not good. They don’t want the kind of Jesus we have because he doesn’t look good. Our lives are oozing out bad smells that is pushing them away from Christ.

When we exemplify Christ by having the fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, our lives releases a good and sweet smell that makes people ask us questions. We are more attractive when we smell good.

I love wearing good perfumes because i love to smell good. People ask me sometimes what perfume i wear. This opens up a conversation and gives me an opportunity to get to know them. This is exactly what happens when we have the fruit of the spirit.

When we have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, we are lifting Jesus Christ up.

Loving people regardless

Having joy regardless of what is happening in our lives

Peace regardless of what is going on around us

Patience. Not just waiting but being faithful in waiting.

Kindness. One that is lacking these days. Not attacking people with our words and actions but ensuring they are seasoned with salt.

Goodness. Not paying evil with evil

Faithfulness. No eye service

Gentleness. Strength under control

Self-control. Ability to subject ourselves to the leading of the Holy Spirit always.

These releases a scent that pulls people to ask us questions and then in turn gives us opportunities to tell them about Christ.

It’s not enough for us to just sing “He said if i be lifted up from the earth…”. It’s a beautiful song indeed but we also need to let the words translate into actions.

What smell are those around us perceiving?

Do they want the kind of Jesus we have?

  1. I pray every day that I would take the “aroma of Christ” with me, even though I know that to some it will be the stench of death. (I Corinthians 2:15-17) But to others it will be the fragrance of life.
In other words, just because someone seems repelled by you or your lifestyle, that doesn’t necessarily mean you are doing something wrong. We won’t be loved by everyone. Some people will hate us. We should just make sure they hate us for the right reason. We should examine ourselves and take a bath (repent), if necessary. 😉

  2. Wonderful post Sister. 🙂 We use to live next door to my mother in law. When my friends who were not saved would come to see me, she would grab them in the yard and start telling them how they were going to hell. How sinful they were, etc. I know she thought she was doing a good thing, and she was trying to help. It was her delivery that pushed them away. It never failed they’d come in and tell me, “if that is your God, I want nothing to do with it.” LORD, thank You for continuing to bless Efua 🙂
