The Way

Each time i read the story of Saul’s encounter with Jesus that led to his salvation, i marvel at the fact that he thought he was doing the right thing prior to his encounter. Saul was a persecutor of christians. He was in the scene when Stephen was brutally killed for his belief in Jesus Christ. He was what we will now refer to in our present day a terrorist who prided himself in the way he persecuted the church.

It’s important for us to note that before his encounter with Jesus, he felt his way was the way. I love the way the English Standard Version (ESV) translates this event.

But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. (Acts 9:1-5)

The highlighted words jumped to me when i read this again in the above version. I got reminded as i studied this scripture that there are two sets of people on earth going on the journey of life. Those who are following ‘the way‘ and those who are following ‘their way‘.

There is only one way to God and that is through Jesus Christ. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14::6)

The words ‘the way’ means there is no other way. Any other way except Jesus Christ that claims can lead to God is false.

Oftentimes those who are on their way think they are on the right path. But the bible tells us that “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”(Proverbs 14:12).

Those who are following the way always look foolish to those who are following their way. “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.” (1 Corinthians 2:14). So don’t be surprised when people don’t understand why you have decided to remain on ‘the way’ even if it doesn’t seem to be the popular way. It also explains why christians are persecuted today. Despite this, don’t allow the heat to make you lose sight of your destination. So long you remain on ‘the way’ and not your way, you will arrive safely.

  1. It was a dramatic one… it was a touching one but it is much ore fascinating seeing how God defended his interest in his life… the story of Saul just tells us he would not allow us perish in ignorance. nice piece message (write up) any time Paul is mentioned I am stirred up helplessly.
